CWG Medal : Soniya Chanu won India’s first medal at CWG

Posted: 04 Oct 2010 05:57 AM PDT

CWG Medal : Soniya Chanu won India’s first medal at CWG at women’s weightlifting 48kg title today on October 4, 2010. Nigerian schoolgirl Augustina Nwaokolo stunned India’s Soniya Chanu to win the women’s weightlifting 48kg title, taking the first gold of the Commonwealth Games. The 17-year-old Nwaokolo set a new Commonwealth record of 175kg after a snatch lift of 77kg and clean and jerk attempt of 98kg.

Soniya Chanu took silver with compatriot Sandhya Rani winning bronze as India’s grip on the division ended after Kunjarani Devi had won 48kg gold in Manchester in 2002 and Melbourne four years ago. After gliding through the opening stage with three confident lifts in the snatch, high school student Nwaokolo then succeeded with 94kg and 98kg in the clean and jerk before failing with 100kg.

But that still left Soniya Chanu, the Commonwealth champion, needing to lift 103kg to make up an overall deficit of nine kilos. However, the pressure of home hopes proved too much for the 30-year-old from Manipur who failed on both of her attempts and despite coming into the Games with a personal best of 175kg, she had to settle for silver with a 167kg total.

Rani had a personal best of 167kg, but she finished on 165kg after failing on a final attempt of 97kg in the clean and jerk. The gold medal was Nigeria’s seventh in a women’s event in Commonwealth Games history, but the first in a sport other than athletics. “I lifted more weight than this during practice, but today I couldn’t,” said Rani.

At the 2006 Melbourne Games, Indian lifters won nine medals, including three golds while in Manchester, four years earlier, they had bagged 27 medals in total, 12 of them gold. Australia’s Erika Yamasaki, the bronze medallist in Melbourne four years ago, crashed out after failing three times attempting 88kg in the clean and jerk.

BJP Website Cyber Theft : BJP send Cyber Fraud Notice to Congress

Posted: 03 Oct 2010 11:44 PM PDT

BJP Website Cyber Theft : BJP send cyber fraud notice to Congress as a cyber war is going between the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as the main Opposition on Sunday accused the ruling party for indulging in theft of its online identity. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) party has also served a legal notice on the Congress claiming that a surreptitiously created portal having a similar domain name that of BJP was diverting users to the AICC website. The Congress, while dismissing the allegation, said, it had not got any such notice, but once received, it would give a befitting reply.

BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said Sunday that the party had sent a legal notice to the Congress over “petty theft” of its online identity. She said that a portal with the partys acronym and no clear ownership identity was diverting users to the Congress website. The BJP spokesperson said the notice was delivered at the Congress office Sep 27, but there had been no official response from the party.

She said a website, http://www.bjp.com, was automatically diverting users to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) website.

The BJP website, http://bjp.org, had been running for over a decade, she said, adding that “ownership of bjp.com was masked” and it links the user to the Congress website.

The BJP spokesperson said the party had sought to find ownership details on the relevant search engines. The details referred to Bharat Journals and Publications and two US telephone numbers, which were linked to an answering machine. “Technically such an entity should be selling some journals, but the site takes you to the AICC website,” Sitharaman said.

Answering queries about the BJP accusation, Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who also heads the partys legal department, said that no legal notice had been brought to his attention. “As of now, no such notice had been brought to my attention. If and when it is received, we will give a befitting reply to such sensationalism and distortion. It is laughable to suggest that Congress should seek to copy the BJP website,” Singhvi said.
